The Port Alberni Bombers continued their recent Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) points streak with an impressive 5-2 victory over Nanaimo Buccaneers on Wednesday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
The Bombers now have nine wins and three overtime losses in their last 12 games, good for 21 points over that span and improved their home ice winning streak to three games. The win allowed the Bombers to move into first place in the VIJHL’s North Division, one point ahead of Campbell River Storm and 13 points ahead of the third-place Buccaneers.
The Bombers trailed twice in the contest, at 1-0 and 2-1, but a first period goal by Zach Spafford and then four unanswered goals (two each by Leim Smith and Nathan Hayes) in the second and third periods put the game away.
Luke Ridgway and Daniel Betcher had two assists each, while Solstice Tennant, Joel Dorn and Zak Green had one helper each. Spafford, Hayes and Smith had one assist each to go along with their goals.
Evan Grant improved his record to 9-1-1 in the Bomber goal, stopping 21 of 23 shots on the evening. Jaxon Hinchey was named the “Energy Player of the Game” for his efforts in the contest.
The Bombers continue VIJHL play this weekend, travelling first to Lake Cowichan to face the Kraken on Friday night, following that up with a Saturday night tilt in Courtenay against the Comox Valley Glacier Kings.
