The Port Alberni Bombers suffered their fourth loss in five games, dropping a 9-2 decision to Victoria Cougars in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play on Friday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
The loss was the second consecutive loss to the Cougars, who defeated the Bombers 9-0 at the Multiplex last Saturday.
The Cougars scored early and then often on Friday. Jacob Bernardo got things going for Victoria, scoring on the power play just over a minute into the contest, and by the end of the period the visitors were ahead 4-1. Logan Meyer scored the Bomber goal, his fifth of the season when he beat Cougar net minder Lane Maarhuis on a breakaway.
Kash Nicklin scored his thirteenth of the campaign to make the score 4-2 just under two minutes into the second period to give the Bombers a chance, but Haydyn Brooks scored thirty-four seconds later to restore the Victoria three-goal lead and then added another just after the halfway point in the period to give the Cougars a 6-2 lead going into the final frame.
From there the Cougars scored three more times to ice the victory.
League scoring lead Joseph Melichar led the way for Victoria, scoring once and adding two assists and the game’s first star, Jacob Bernardo did the same.
The Bombers will try to right the ship on Saturday night when they travel to Parksville and a date with Oceanside Generals in a 7:00 pm start at Oceanside Place. The game is the first of three on the road for the locals as they travel to Nanaimo for an encounter with the Buccaneers on Thursday and then go north on Friday for a contest against Campbell Rive Storm.
They return home on Sunday, December 14 when they host Nanaimo at the Multiplex. That game is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm, one hour earlier than usual.
