Bombers Continue Winning Ways

The Port Alberni Bombers extended their Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League winning streak to three games with a comprehensive 6-3 victory over Lake Cowichan Kraken on Wednesday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
As has been the case during their current skein, the Bombers surrendered the first goal, but rebounded to score two of their own, the first, a power play marker by Makhi Wandler, followed by a McCall Nault tally that came just after another Kraken penalty had elapsed, and the Bombers went to the dressing room leading 2-1 after twenty minutes.
The start of the second period proved to be the turning point as the Bombers scored two goals seven seconds apart, and before the period was one minute old, the locals led 4-1 on goals by Cole Campbell and Joel Dorn. The Kraken made the score 4-2 at 1:29 of the period, but Dorn scored his second of the contest mid-way through the second frame, making the score 5-2 after forty minutes.
The third period saw the Kraken get back to within two tallies when Diezel Wyton scored, but the Bombers restored their three-goal cushion when Malik Oliva scored his team’s second power play goal of the night.
Nicholas Kalinocka and Hunter McLean scored the other Lake Cowichan goals. Kalinocka now has five goals and three assists against the Bombers in three games.
Kash Nicklin had three assists and was named the games third star, Geon Park and Oliva had two assists, while Jaxon Hinchey, Ethan Unger and Nault added single helpers.
The Bombers were 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Kraken were 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
Dorn was named the game’s first star for his efforts and Joseph Naccarato earned second star honors, stopping 42 of 45 Kraken shots and picking up his sixth win of the season against five losses.
The Bombers play only once this coming weekend – Friday night on the road against Peninsula Panthers. They return to the friendly confines of the Alberni Valley Multiplex on Saturday, November 22 when Lake Cowichan is again the foe.
