Bombers Extend Winning Streak Against Saanich

The Port Alberni Bombers, after a nearly two-week break, continued their winning ways with a comprehensive 5-0 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) victory over Saanich Predators on Friday night in Saanich.
The win, the Bombers third in succession, saw the locals dominate in most phases of the game, including a 3-for-8 performance on the power play and producing a clean sheet as the Predators went 0-for-3 on their man advantage opportunities.
John Shields, with his second goal of the season, scored unassisted to give the Bombers the early lead with Owen Ditzel scoring 28 seconds later to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead after one period.
After a scoreless second frame the Bombers added three more in the third period, when Ditzel scored his second of the night and fourth of the season before Zak Green scored his first of the campaign less than two minutes later. Leim Smith capped off the evening, potting his nineteenth of the season with five seconds remaining in the contest. Elliot Kuprash, McCall Nault, Joel Dorn, Green and Shields all added assists to complete the scoring.
Damien Knackstedt recorded the shutout in the Bombers goal, his first and the team’s second whitewash of the season. The Bombers outshot their hosts 56-18, including a 26-5 advantage in the first period.
The Bombers next game is Saturday night when they host Peninsula Panthers in a 7:00 pm start at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. The contest will be the first of two games at home as Oceanside Generals will be in Port Alberni on Wednesday night.
