Bombers Fall to Generals in Home Opener

After playing on the road for the first two weekends of the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) regular season, the Port Alberni Bombers came home to the Alberni Valley Multiplex where they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Oceanside Generals on Friday night.
After a close first period that saw Daxx Malenka score the only goal of the frame for the Generals, it appeared as if either team could walk away with a victory. But things changed in the second period.
Mateo Lobos-Worger scored at the 11:59 mark of the period, a goal that seemed to give the visitors some life, and from that point the game seemed all uphill for the Bombers.
Jacob Leamy scored a power play goal late in the second period, and then Schafer Gibbs scored a shorthanded marker early in the third frame, and that would be more than enough. Liutaruras Rimkevicius score with two minutes remaining in the contest to seal a contest that had been over for quite some time.
The Generals outshot the Bombers 48-31 on the evening, going 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Bombers were 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
Bombers net minder Xavier Hahn was named third star, while Gibbs was named second star, and Donato Padula, who picked up the shutout in the Parksville goal, was named first star.
The Bombers are back in action Saturday night when they travel to Courtenay and a date with Comox Valley Glacier Kings. That contest starts at 6:30 pm. The Bombers then return home for two games at the Alberni Valley Multiplex, the first on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm when they face Lake Cowichan Kraken before a tilt with Westshore Wolves on Sunday, September 27. The game against the Wolves starts at 4:00 pm, as will all Sunday games this season.
