Bombers Go North For Shootout Win

The Port Alberni Bombers defeated Comox Valley Glacier Kings 2-1 on Saturday night in what was the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League’s (VIJHL) first shootout game of the season.
Playing at the Comox Valley Sports Centre, the Bombers took a 1-0 lead early in the contest when McCall Nault scored at the 41 second mark of the first period, and maintained that lead until late in the third frame, when the Glacier Kings evened things on a goal by Cameron Collins with just over three minutes remaining in regulation time, sending the game to overtime.
After overtime solved nothing the teams went to the shootout, where Joel Dorn scored the only goal by either team, giving the Bombers the win.
Bombers net minder Joseph Naccarato was the star of the piece, stopping 59 of 60 shots sent his way, including many in the spectacular category, one of which was a toe save on the last of three Glacier King shots in the shootout.
The Bombers improved their record to six wins against six losses and an overtime loss – good for thirteen points and second place in the VIJHL’s North Division, one point behind Campbell River Storm.
The Bombers next game is Saturday afternoon at the Alberni Valley Multiplex. The contest, part of Hockey Day in Port Alberni, is set for a 2:00 pm start.
