Bombers Lose to High-Flying Islanders

The Port Alberni Bombers suffered their first home-ice loss of the season, falling 9-5 to Kerry Park Islanders in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play on Saturday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
The second period proved to be the Bombers’ undoing. After falling behind 3-0 mid-way through the first frame, the locals stormed back with two of their own in the latter stages of the opening period, trailing 3-2 at the break. But five unanswered second period goals by the Islanders proved to be too much.
Leim Smith and Daniel Betcher scored two goals each for the Bombers, while Kai Verbrugge added a single tally. Smith, Betcher and Verbrugge all scored once each in the final frame where the Bombers did regain some semblance of pride, outscoring the visitors 3-1 over the last 20 minutes.
Carson Brown was the star of the night, scoring five goals for the Islanders, while Rylan Davis scored twice and Beckham Lazaro and Jacob Morrison added three assists each.
The Bombers did outshoot the Islanders 49-41, including a 20-9 advantage in the third frame.
The Bombers are at home twice this week, hosting Saanich Predators on Wednesday night before welcoming Victoria Cougars to the Multiplex on Saturday evening. Both games are scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.
