The Port Alberni Bombers, looking for their first home ice victory of the 2026-27 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) season, dropped a 7-4 decision to the Westshore Wolves on Sunday afternoon at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
Playing in front of 293 fans, the Bombers scored an early first period marker to take a 1-0 lead, but the Wolves rebounded for three goals of their own and led 3-1 after twenty minutes.
In the second frame the Bombers made things interesting, scoring twice, once on the power play and once while shorthanded, to tie the contest at 3-3, but Westshore scored a power play marker to regain the lead at 4-3 going into the second intermission.
The third period looked for the longest time as if either team could have skated away with a victory, but two Wolves goals in the space of fourteen seconds, one by Trace Anderson, the other by Jack MacMillan, gave the visitors a three-goal cushion at 6-3. Dexter Spring would add another for the Wolves to extend the lead, and Cole Campbell would score shortly after for the Bombers, but in the end it would prove to be too little, too late and the Wolves would extend their season-opening unblemished record to seven straight victories.
Kilian Alves Pereira, Domenico Tremblay and Ryan Christenson would add the other Bomber goals. Mason Smith and Joel Dorn had two assists each, while Alves Pereira and Kolten Brown added single helpers.
Jasper Fellbaum led the way for the Wolves scoring once and adding three assists, while Noah Gebicki added three assists. Samuel Wong had two goals and a helper. Dexter Spring, Trace Anderson, Sam Spring and Jack MacMillan scored as well for the Wolves.
The Bombers, who came into the contest 1-for-14 on the power play, were 2-for-3 with the man advantage on Sunday, while Westshore was 2-for-5 with the extra skater. The Bombers also scored once while shorthanded. The Wolves outshot the Bombers 54-27.
The Bombers play twice next weekend, travelling to Nanaimo to face the Buccaneers on Friday night before returning home to the Alberni Valley Multiplex and a date with Saanich Predators on Saturday evening, when they hope to end their three-game home losing streak. Saturday’s contest is slated for a 6:00 pm start.
