The Port Alberni Bombers 12-game Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) points streak ended on Friday night in Lake Cowichan, thanks to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Lake Cowichan Kraken.
It was the first regulation time loss for the Bombers since October 16 when they lost 3-2 to the Saanich Predators on home ice.
Luke Bennett scored the winner on the power play, with just under four minutes remaining in the contest.
The teams went to the third period tied 1-1 as Aleksander Leonelli, for the Kraken, and Casey Rutland, for the Bombers, scored in the second frame.
Kash Nicklin and Zach Spafford assisted on Rutland’s goal.
The Bombers outshot Lake Cowichan 30-18, but had a hard time solving Kraken net minder Hayden Lovell who was named the game’s second star.
The loss, combined with Campbell River Storm’s 3-1 victory over Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Friday night in Campbell River, dropped the Bombers back into second place in the VIJHL’s North Division.
The Bombers will look to get back on the winning track when they face the Glacier Kings in Courtenay on Saturday night at 7:45 pm at the Comox Valley Sports Centre.
