The Port Alberni Bombers picked up their fifth consecutive Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) victory with a convincing 4-0 decision over the Oceanside Generals on Wednesday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
The shutout was the Bombers third in as many games, and the second in a row for net minder Evan Grant who stopped 24 shots en route to the whitewash.
The five wins ties a season-high for consecutive victories for the Bombers, matching the team’s season opening five-game streak.
After a scoreless first period, the Bombers scored at 11:05 of the second frame when Sean Richards scored his twenty-second goal of the season, firing a shot that was stopped by Oceanside goaltender Josh Nuttall, but rebounded into a back-checking General and into the net.
Richards scored his second of the night early in the third frame, this time banking the puck off a cluster of players in front of the net on a shot from well below the goal line.
Jaxon Hinchey, with his fifth of the campaign, scored an insurance goal and Leim Smith added an empty-netter while shorthanded to complete the scoring. The goal was Smith’s twentieth of the season. Kai Verbrugge with two assists, and Luke Ridgway with one helper, also contributed points in the victory.
The Bombers outshot the Generals 56-24 on the evening.
The locals travel to Mill Bay on Saturday night to face the Kerry Park Islanders for their only game of the weekend. That contest starts at 7:30 pm. They return home to face Peninsula Panthers on Saturday, February 8 at 7:00 pm at the Multiplex.
