The Port Alberni Bombers began their 2024-25 Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League season with a convincing 6-2 win over Nanaimo Buccaneers on Thursday night in Nanaimo.
Six different players scored their first goals of the season. Sean Richards, Leim Smith, Elliot Kuprash, Grayson Salmon, Luke Ridgway and Joel Dorn paced a balanced attack, while Richards added three assists and Solstice Tennant contributed two helpers.
The Bombers held period leads of 2-0 and 5-1 before an evenly played third frame. A key moment occurred in the second frame when Salmon scored 13 seconds after the Buccaneers had scored their first of the night. The goal re-established a Bombers three-goal lead and provided a sense of security for the locals.
Evan Grant was the goaltender of record for the Bombers, stopping 12 of the 14 shots he faced. While the quantity of shots was low, Grant made a number of quality saves that kept his team in front.
The Bombers next game is on the road again as they face Oceanside Generals on Saturday night at Oceanside Place. Opening face-off is scheduled for 7 pm.
