The Port Alberni Bombers got a late third-period goal from Daniel Betcher to defeat South Division-leading Westshore Wolves 3-2 in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play on Wednesday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
The Bombers took a 1-0 lead in the first frame when Sam Davidson scored his third goal of the season with assists coming from Elliot Kuprash and Grayson Salmon, taking that lead to the dressing room at the intermission.
The second period saw the Wolves fight back, scoring two goals off the sticks of Parker Atkinson and Zion Lavoie, but Salmon sandwiched a goal of his own between the Wolves tallies and the teams were tied at 2-2 after the middle stanza.
Betcher’s goal was the only tally of the third period, giving the Bombers the win and catapulting them ahead of Campbell River Storm into first place in the VIJHL North Division standings and a spot atop the league’s overall standings.
The Bombers’ record stands at 4-0 on home ice in the early going of the 2024-25 season.
Port Alberni will play their next two games on the road, this Saturday against the Glacier Kings in Courtenay, and next Friday in Lake Cowichan against the Kraken.
After those games they play three in a row on home ice, meeting Kerry Park (October12), Saanich (October 16) and Victoria (October 19).
