The Port Alberni Bombers, scoring once in each period, defeated highly-ranked Westshore Wolves 3-2 in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League action on Friday night before 330 fans at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
Rylan Clark’s first period goal gave the Bombers a 1-0 lead after twenty minutes and Quinn Bouchard pushed the advantage to 2-0, scoring on a breakaway fourteen seconds into the second frame.
From there the Wolves moved to within one goal when Tyson Schamehorn scored midway through the second period, but Joel Dorn restored the two-goal lead, scoring the eventual winning marker just over three minutes into the third frame.
Sam Spring brought the Wolves back to within one goal at 3-2 at 6:15 of the third period, but that ended the scoring for both teams as the locals were victorious in a game that many assumed would go the other way.
Jeremy Gould and Garrison Peck garnered assists in the victory, while Joe Naccarato was brilliant once again in stopping 50 of 52 shots sent his way and picking up first star honours.
Neither team scored on the power play – the Bombers going 0-for-3 with the man advantage, the Wolves going 0-for-2.
