Bombers Win in Extra Time

For the second night in a row Port Alberni Bombers did what they had to do, and got some help from another team, as they continued their pursuit of first place in the VIJHL’s North Division.
Playing at the Alberni Valley Multiplex on Saturday night, the Bombers defeated Westshore Wolves 6-5 in overtime, while a little over an hour later, Comox Valley Glacier Kings defeated Campbell River Storm 2-0 in Courtenay. The results mean the Bombers are three points in arrears of the Storm with three games remaining. The Storm have two games left in their regular season.
While the Bombers led most of the way in their tilt against Westshore, they had to come from behind to secure the victory.
Leading 4-3 going into the third frame the Bombers gave up two goals to the Wolves to fall behind 5-4, but Zach Spafford scored with just over one minute remaining to tie the contest, and then Luke Ridgway scored on a great individual effort to give Port Alberni the win at 7:37 of overtime.
Spafford and Ridgway had two goals each to pace the Bomber attack, while Sam Davidson and Jack Barrett scored the others. Davidson and Ridgway also added assists as did Owen Ditzel, Kenneth Boychuk and Leim Smith. Sean Richards picked up two assists as well.
Port Alberni plays three games this week to close out their campaign. First up is a home date with the Comox Valley Glacier Kings on Wednesday at the Alberni Valley Multiplex, followed by a Thursday night encounter with the Buccaneers in Nanaimo and a Friday night date with the Kraken in Lake Cowichan. Wednesday’s contest is scheduled for a 7:00 pm puck drop.
