The Port Alberni Bombers pushed their home ice record to 3-0 with a 4-3 overtime victory over Comox Valley Glacier Kings in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play on Wednesday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
The Bombers led 2-0 after two periods of play – Zach Spafford scoring early in the first frame and Jack Barrett adding a power play goal late in the second stanza to provide the advantage.
The Glacier Kings came storming back midway through the third period when Henry Toomer and Ryan Harris scored to tie the contest but the Bombers scored against the run of play to take the lead again when Sean Richards scored to make it 3-2.
Just when it looked as though the Bombers had survived a scare, Toomer scored his second of the night to tie the game with 55 seconds remaining, sending the teams to overtime.
The hero of the piece was the Bombers Luke Ridgway, who scored at 6:42 of the extra frame sending most of the 293 fans in attendance home happy.
Ridgway also added two assists, while Leim Smith added two helpers including the assist on Ridgway’s winner. Elliot Kuprash and Sam Davidson were credited with assists as well.
The victory allowed the Bombers to leap-frog over Campbell River Storm into first place in the VIJHL’s North Division. The Storm lost on Wednesday night – 4-2 to South Division-leading Westshore Wolves.
The Bombers travel to the Panorama Rec Centre on Friday night to take on the Peninsula Panthers in a 7:30 pm start, before returning home next Wednesday when they face the Wolves in a 7:00 pm start at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
