Port Alberni Bombers picked up their fifth win in a row, a 5-4 overtime victory over Westshore Wolves on Saturday night at the Juan de Fuca Arena.The win gives the Bombers six wins, and two overtime losses in their last eight games, good for 14 of a possible 16 points in that stretch.
The Bombers never led until Sean Richards scored at 3:45 of the overtime period, coming from behind to tie the score on three separate occasions before sending the game to extra time.
Daniel Betcher scored three times in the contest, while John Shields scored a shorthanded goal to round out the scoring for the locals.
Richards added two assists, while Leim Smith picked up four helpers. Jaxon Hinchey, Zachary Ellis-Winters and Sam Davidson also added one assist each.
Zion Lavoie, with three goals, and Wyatt Taron were the Westshore goal scorers.
Evan Grant and Wolves net minder Dryden Demelo both had superb games, each coming up with a number of spectacular saves to hold their team in the contest. The Bombers outshot the Wolves 40-37 on the evening.
Coupled with Wednesday’s 4-3 victory over Campbell River Storm, the Bomber victory was their second straight overtime win in a row over a team ahead of them in the standings.
The Bombers next game is on home ice when they face Kerry Park Islanders on Friday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex, followed by a Saturday night affair against Victoria Cougars, also at home. Both games are scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
