Bombers Win in Record-Setting Fashion

In what had been a hotly-contested battle for two periods the Port Alberni Bombers scored a record-setting seven goals in the third frame to defeat the Saanich Predators 10-3 in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) play on Saturday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
Trailing 2-0 after twenty minutes, the Bombers scored three second-period markers to tie the Predators at 3-3 after forty minutes in what until that time had been a highly entertaining affair.
But the third period saw the Bombers grab the game by the throat when Bogdan Rogushkin scored the first of his three third-period markers, giving the Bombers the lead for the first time at 1:44 of the frame. From their Kolten Brown, Rogushkin, Domenico Tremblay with his second of the night, Mason Smith, Ben Fortier, and Rogushkin again, completed the scoring. Ryan Christenson and Kilian Alves Pereira had second-period tallies for the Bombers. Smith and Alves Pereira added two assists, as did Darius Kanalan, Daniil Kupstov and Troy Zajac.
Carter Davidson, Maxime Simard and Zac Tomljenovic scored for Saanich.
The Bombers were 3-for-5 on the power play, while holding the Predators to 0-for-6 with the extra attacker. The Bombers out shot the visitors 42-20 on the night. Ethan Losier picked up the win in the Bombers net.
The ten goals by the Bombers tied a team record for most goals in a game, first set in October 2021 in a 10-2 victory over Nanaimo Buccaneers and equaled in December 2024 in a 10-0 win over Oceanside Generals. The seven goals in the third period broke a Bombers record for goals in a period, breaking the old record of five goals which had occurred on more than one occasion, including the aforementioned October 2021 game against Nanaimo. Rogushkin’s hat trick in the third period breaks the old Bombers record of two goals in one period, held jointly by a number of players and last accomplished by Ethan Unger in January of 2026.
The Bombers return to the ice next weekend when they host a pair of games. On Friday the Comox Valley Glacier Kings invade the Alberni Valley Multiplex, while the Kerry Park Islanders come to Port Alberni on Saturday. Friday’s contest begins at 7:00 pm with Saturday’s encounter scheduled to start at 6:00 pm.
