Panthers Defeat Bombers in Scrappy Affair

The Port Alberni Bombers dropped their second game in a row, falling 3-1 to VIJHL-leading Peninsula Panthers on Friday night at the Panorama Recreation Centre. The loss, coupled with Campbell River Storm’s 2-1 victory over Saanich Predators, means the Bombers are now three points behind the Storm in the battle for North Island Division supremacy.
The teams were tied at 1-1 after the second frame, but third period goals by Brendan Williams and Lukas Preweda sent the Panther fans home with smiles on their faces.
Carson Harris scored the other Panther goal, early in the first period, while Kai Verbrugge scored the lone Bomber goal just over a minute into the second frame while his team was shorthanded.
The Bombers outshot the league leaders 36-30 but couldn’t solve Peninsula net minder Jacob Walsh.
For only the fifth time this season the Bombers had more penalty minutes than their opponents, the bulk of those minutes coming when Jack Barrett, Elliot Kuprash and Luke Ridgway all picked up 10-minute misconducts at the end of the game.
The Bombers now have one week to prepare for their next contest. They return home this coming Friday to face Comox Valley Glacier Kings at the Alberni Valley Multiplex in a 7:00 pm start.
