In a battle between Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) North Division leaders, Campbell River Storm defeated Port Alberni Bombers 6-4 on Wednesday night at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
After taking a 3-1 lead when Kash Nicklin scored 17 seconds into the second period, the Bombers surrendered three goals in just under three minutes giving the visitors a 4-3 lead before the middle frame was five minutes old. A late Bomber goal by Jack Barrett, his third of the night, sent the teams to the second intermission tied at 4-4, but the Storm scored the only goals of the third frame as Jan-Felix Faupel gave the Storm a one-goal lead and Logan Vigneault sealed the victory, scoring into an empty net.
Jacob Kulas with two goals, and Ethan Hill and Dominic Greco were the other Storm goal scorers.
The Storm now have 40 points and lead the Bombers by one point in the VIJHL North Division standings with one game in hand.
Things don’t get any easier for the Bombers as they travel to the Capitol Region on Friday night to take on the South Division-leading Peninsula Panthers at the Panorama Rec Centre. The Panthers have lost only one game in regulation time and two others in overtime to sit atop the VIJHL’s overall standings with 44 points from 24 games.
