Bombers begin VIJHL season this weekend

The Port Alberni Bombers begin their 2023-24 regular season campaign with a pair of road games this Thursday and Friday night.

First up will be the Nanaimo Buccaneers on Thursday at the Nanaimo Ice Center, followed by a Friday evening tilt against the Lake Cowichan Kraken at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.

Both the Buccaneers and Kraken finished below the Bombers, and out of playoff contention, in the VIJHL North Division standings in 2022-23 and will be looking to improve on those efforts.

For their part, the Bombers 2022-23 campaign ended with a tough opening round playoff series loss to the eventual VIJHL Champions, Oceanside Generals.

After a less than desirable pre-season which saw the Bombers drop two lop-sided decisions, Assistant Coach Mike Doucette said the team is still hoping to sign a few more players, but for now the team will be dressing several AP’s (associated players). Currently the team is on the hunt for players, and Doucette hopes the team can find some quality “people” as they try to build a strong culture within the club.
