The Port Alberni Bombers travelled to Lake Cowichan to open their preseason schedule on Friday night where they dropped a 5-4 overtime decision to the Kraken before a crowd of 230 at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.
After building a 3-0 first-period lead, the Bombers surrendered four unanswered goals, but a third-period marker by Ivan Ponomarev, his second of the night, tied the contest at 4-4 with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation time, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, the Kraken’s Chase Thompson scored at the fifty-five second mark, giving the host the victory. The teams will meet again on Sunday at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
Ponomarev led the Bomber offence with two goals, while Joel Dorn and Kolten Brown each added a goal and an assist. Troy Zajac and newcomer Daniil Kupstov had one assist each. Dace Coburn and Brandon Hachey shared the goaltending duties. Coburn stopping 15 of 19 shots while Hachey stopped 18 of 19 Kraken attempts.
The same two teams will meet on Sunday afternoon in a 4:00 pm start at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
