Bombers Win at Multiplex

Thanks to a three-goal second period, the Port Alberni Bombers evened their Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League (VIJHL) preseason record at one win and one loss following a 5-2 win over Lake Cowichan Kraken on Sunday evening in front of a crowd of 225 fans at the Alberni Valley Multiplex.
Trailing 1-0 after twenty minutes, the Bombers scored three goals in less than five minutes in the last half of the second frame to grab a lead they would never relinquish.
Joel Dorn got things started with his second goal of the preseason, followed just over three minutes later when Wyatt Fyfe scored his first and then one minute and nineteen seconds later as Darius Kanalan scored his first. Kanalan’s goal came on the power play.
The Kraken closed to within one goal at 3-2 when Colby Jeffries scored, also on the power play later in the second frame, but that was as close as the visitors would get.
There was no further scoring until the last minute when the Bombers scored twice into an empty net, the first by Ben Fortier at 19:25 and then Carter Knoll just milliseconds before the end of regulation time. Oliver Lynch scored the other Kraken goal when he opened the scoring in the first period. Xavier Hahn played the full sixty minutes in the Bombers goal, stopping 21 of 23 shots sent his way.
The Bombers have one more preseason game, to be played on Wednesday night at the Multiplex. They will host Comox Valley Glacier Kings in a 7:00 pm start, and then return to practices for ten days before opening the VIJHL regular season on Saturday, September 5 against Oceanside Generals in Parksville. The Bombers then travel to Campbell River on September 11 and Nanaimo on September 13 before returning to the Multiplex for their home opener on Friday, September 18 against Oceanside.
