Bombers Regroup for Solid Win Over Glacier Kings

Putting in a much more concerted effort, the Port Alberni Bombers rebounded from a shutout loss on Friday to defeat Comox Valley Glacier Kings 3-2 in Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League play on Saturday night at Comox Valley Sports Centre.
Ivan Ponomarev got the Bombers going with his first goal of the season late in the opening frame, as Port Alberni led 1-0 after twenty minutes.
The second period saw the Bombers jump ahead 2-0 on a Kyle Mori goal at 3:03 of the frame, but the Glacier Kings rebounded with one of their own when Trevor Swanson scored at 8:50. That was all the scoring in the second stanza as the Bombers clung to their one goal lead at 2-1 after forty minutes.
The Glacier Kings tied the contest early in the third period – Collin Lee scoring a power play marker at 5:49, but Marton Loschnig scored what proved to be the winner for the Bombers less than two minutes later.
The Bombers outshot the Glacier Kings 44-32 on the night. Kings goalie Ander Reyes picked up second star honours for his efforts while Ethan Losier had a solid game between the pipes for the Bombers. While not as busy as his counterpart, Losier made a number of spectacular saves in registering the victory.
Ponomarev was the game’s first star, adding an assist to go along with his goal. Kilian Alves Pereira picked up third star honours for the Bombers, tallying an assist.
The win snapped a three game losing streak for the Bombers and their effort should hold them in good stead as they ready themselves for Wednesday night’s matchup with Lake Cowichan Kraken at the Multiplex. The contest will be the first regular season meeting between the Bombers and Kraken. They met twice in the pre-season with each team winning a game on home ice. Wednesday’s game starts at 7:00 pm.
