Bombers Struggle Early in Loss to Kraken

The Port Alberni Bombers found themselves trailing early and couldn’t recover, falling 8-4 to the Lake Cowichan Kraken on Friday night at the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena.
Trailing 2-0 after five and a half minutes, the Bombers got a goal from Landon Turgeon to get within one goal before the game was eight minutes old, but that was as close as the Bombers got.
Four straight Kraken goals, two in the first frame, and two more in the first minute of the second period put the Bombers in a 6-1 hole.
Kash Nicklin provided some hope for the Bombers, scoring two goals in succession before the second frame was 10 minutes old, potting his second and third goals of the young season, but two more Kraken goals on either side of the second intermission sealed the Bombers’ fate.
Kai Verbrugge added a third period marker for the Bombers to round out the scoring.
The Kraken outshot the Bombers 45-24 on the evening.
The Bombers play the reigning VIJHL champion Oceanside Generals in a home-and-home series next Friday and Saturday. The two teams meet in Port Alberni on Friday for the Bombers home opener, before renewing acquaintances the following night in Parksville. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 pm.
